La Papessa, stained glass and textile mosaic, 49" x 25", framed
"La Papessa" is a 49" x 25" framed stained glass and textile mosaic. The floor alone consists of 155 pieces of individually cut glass and fabric. Hidden within the flowing gown of La Papessa are several mysterious women (symbolic of intuition) and fish (symbolic of the subconscious).
La Papessa is inspired by the Tarot deck’s second Major Arcana card, the High Priestess. Often called “The Popess”, the card symbolizes female esoteric wisdom, reflection and the subconscious. She is that quiet place with which we make connection when we reflect on making changes or taking a new course in life. She is our inner-wisdom.
A quiet card, she represents non-action but she is not powerless. She is preparing to act, and act wisely.
