"Invincible Cover Persona", Stained glass and textile mosaic on wood panel, framed, 25" x 25"
Invincible Cover Persona is a stained glass, textile and paper mosaic on a birch wood panel, framed and ready to hang.
The "Invincible Cover Persona" is a term referenced by Anodea Judith in "Eastern Body Western Mind" - a book about psychology and the Chakra system. In short, this persona is one we adopt after experiencing emotional and/or physical pain repeatedly. It's created as a defense - our best effort to keep ourselves safe.
Sometimes the defense saves our lives. When situations call for constant vigilance, we adapt to survive. But when the road map of our life takes us in a new direction, continuing to carry the same defenses only halts our growth.
I'm reminded of an old story: a young man is travelling a far distance. He has only a light pack, so he's making good time. Eventually, he comes to a river that he cannot cross on foot. He gathers branches and roots and builds a raft. With much effort, he crosses the raging river successfully. Once on the other side of the river, he continues to drag the raft behind him even though there are no other rivers in sight. As a result, his journey becomes much more laborious.
That young man is us when we hold onto self-protective patterns that no longer serve us. The Invincible Cover Persona may be hard to lay down, but it prevents us from developing truly deep relationships. The mask of perfection keeps us from discovering the beauty in vulnerability, and from valuing ourselves perfectly as imperfect beings.
