Hejira, mixed media on birch board, 36.5" x 18.5", framed
"Hejira" is a 36.5" x 18.5" mixed media collage on a framed birch wood panel. The piece incorporates stained glass mosaic, textiles, chain, wax, and beading.
Best known as the title of a Joni Mitchell album, "Hejira" is also an Arabic word that refers to a "journey from a hostile environment to a better situation." Whether that hostile environment is a physical location, a relationship, a bad habit, or our own negative thought patterns, Hejira is a necessary step on the path of personal growth.
Travelling is not enough, however, because even leaving can become a bad habit if we leave for the wrong reasons. The figure in Hejira is grounded - rooted firmly in the Earth. Lace overlays the trunk that has become her person. She is stable and welcomes the unknown because her home rests within.
Carrying baggage (because we all have some), she travels from the dark wood of autumn as the leaves fall behind her.
